Mom and Dad
Approximately 20 years ago, my mom and dad were just a pair of clueless kids who assumed being grown up means getting married and starting a family. They still have no idea what the fuck they’re doing, but they’ve been pretty good nonetheless.
Even though they tried being tigers early on, they’re rather liberal for Asian parents. They’ve always encouraged me to do what...

Self-help
This is another installment in the short story I’ve been working on. It’s an attempt to create a feel-good intermission in a tragicomedy.

The day after being released from her duties at Wine and Dine, Mona did as any strong, independent woman would do and practiced yoga on her balcony before the rising sun.
At eight in the morning, Miami traffic drowned out the songbirds, and the...

Tasteless
People are singing the national anthem on Sheridan Road, screaming outside my window and running up and down the halls cheering, and it just makes me sad.
I can understand if people are celebrating near ground zero, but how many NU students have been personally touched by 9/11? I feel like the majority of the people out there are just in the mood to make some noise because the news is shocking...

Conviction
If there’s one thing that bugs me about being a journalist, it’s that I can’t always report on what I actually care about because journalism is often just as much a business as it is a cause.
Sometimes people talk to me all day about their views and their motivations and ideals and suspicions and it drives me nuts, the way everybody’s so goddamn sure they know what...

In my never-ending quest for truth, I have found that few things are good for both looking at and eating.
This vanilla cupcake from Bleeding Heart Bakery in Chicago was really only good for looking at. However, there was some sort of fruit preserve beneath the frosting, which was pleasantly surprising.
Yet the only way I know this is because it was rejected by the homeless person I offered it...

Rejection
I interviewed for a web internship with The Boston Globe today. I didn’t get the position because as a freshman, I was neither far along enough in my studies nor experienced enough for the job.
However, the Globe representative who interviewed me used “you’re” when she meant “your” in her rejection email. It was like something out of Sex and the City, and it...

Aphrodisiac
This is only the first part of something that hasn’t been titled yet. It’s sort of an experiment in introducing characters with a bang.

At eight in the evening, the Calle de Sonrisas resounded with the clatter of heels and young people’s laughter steeped in herbal humor. The sun had barely set and the air was heavy with the scent of sea salt and charcoal from the neighbors’...

omerm asked: Hi. I study at Northwestern too. Small world. I figured you probably follow me because you know that though. Just saying hi.
Also, I'm sorry for your loss. I read through the post about your grandfather. Hope you and your family are doing well.

"Alas..."
waking-dreams:
Jean-Paul Sartre was wall-eyed and altogether not a very handsome fellow. Therefore, he may have been taken aback when his fellow existentialist, Albert Camus, expanded Sartre’s notion of human freedom by saying, “Alas, after a certain age every man is responsible for the face he has.” Curiously, Camus looked a lot like Humphrey Bogart.

Grandpa died an hour ago.
I’m not sure how I feel. Hearing my father cry over the phone before he abruptly hung up puts the whole situation in a more acutely verifiable light than did my mother breaking the news, which simply put me in shock. And shock, though immediately jolting, is actually quite a numbing sensation once it settles.
In a patriarchal society such as China, the death of a...
